How to connect to a Synology NAS via SSH

I've tried replacing localhost with the name of the Synology device, to no avail. PHP files themselves work fine but I cannot connect to a database. This is a new device, with a fresh install of packages so I haven't even changed the root password yet.

I even tried installing Apache 2. I'm at a loss. Has anyone tried to connect to a mysql database using Synology DSM 6 and lived to tell the tale? There are too many cause to reach the connection issue.

Additionally, adding additional hardware resources like adding memory is a great way to maximize your Synology Docker host. To find out if your Synology Diskstation has an Intel chipset, look no further than the Synology Wiki. Below are some useful development tools that you can run with your Synology NAS.

Once there, you can search for the Docker application and easily install it onto your system. The first thing you will want to consider is backend data persistence.

Pretty convenient that we're running this whole Docker environment on a NAS, right? You can pick your own, or you can use my examples. The next thing you'll want to do is enable CLI connectivity to your Diskstation if you don't already have this enabled.

My assumption is that if you're interested in Docker, you probably already have this enabled, but if not I'll provide these steps below:. There's no sense in documenting this process much further, but you get the idea. My main concern is that you're enabling SSH, and using a random high port. For further readingfollowing the instructions at Synology's wiki. Next, you'll want to create the persistent data directories for Docker to use.

I am going to stick with Synology's method as close as possible. Below are some examples that you can use. These are more developer-focused, but you'll get the idea.

Ghost is what I'm using to present you with this walk-through. I like it because it's simple and attractive. It uses a Markdown language that's easy to use. So if I create a blog walk-through, in most cases I can use the same code for my GitHub repositories, like I've done for my Kubelab Examples. Enough with the benefits of Ghost, let's get to the the part where we run it. I recommend doing this so you have one place to store all of your custom Docker configuration data.

This keeps your personalized Docker containers separate from what Synology would include, should you choose to use their default Docker applications like Gitlab or Redmine. I also changed the permissions to which is the user Synology uses for their default Docker data folder mappings. This is something I want to look into further though, especially after reading Alexander Morozov's LK4D4 on Github namespace examplebecause I'd really like to limit running containers in privileged mode, and so should you where possible.

So what I've done is I've told Docker to restart this container always pretty obvioususe a tcp high port which you will want to change yourself and map the data folder we've created to the default Ghost configuration data folder within the container. The really nice thing about Docker is that the mapped host directory takes priority over what exists in the container as I experienced it. If there is data in that folder like you're previous settings and Ghost Blog than it will prioritize that over the container.

This is great for destroying and re-creating the container. GitLab GitLab is an extremely powerful development tool. I'm not going to say that I like it better than GitHub, but there are some features that I really like about it.Are you new to blizz and online meetings or classes and need some help?

When tracking the device landscape out there, there is definitively a trend to replace large standalone servers with small, easy to administer NAS boxes. They are quick to set up, do not eat up too much space and are convenient to use.

DiskStation Manager

These boxes also create add on values by offering interfaces to calendars, web mails, audio players, photo collections and more. At first, you have to download the correct package for your Synology NAS box. Usually, your Synology Marketplace picks the correct architecture for your device, but you have to know the device details and find out what your CPU is to get the right download. If you do not know what architecture you have, a quick look here may help you.

We are currently supporting ARM and Intel based devices. For both, Intel and ARM, you will find two download packages: armv7 and armv5 target different ARM architectures, while amd64 x and i x target Intel. EDIT: Update : We noticed, that some of the most recent Synology models introduced a new architecture that we did not support, yet.

After downloading the package, you have to install it using the package center from Synology. Log into your DSM as administrative user. Please note that we only support systems from DSM 6 onward. Open the package center. First, you have to adapt the trust level of the package center to allow packages from any publisher. Once you finish the wizard, your TeamViewer installation will start automatically if you had previously selected the autostart checkbox in the last screen.

Now your TeamViewer is ready to connect to your account. But before doing so, please make sure that you reset your Trust Level to its former value. Hint : Leaving it at Any Publisher is not required for operation and may make your DiskStation susceptible to attacks.

Now it is time to assign your DiskStation to your account. There are two ways to do that.Written by Ingmar Verheij on April 21st, Posted in Synology. For certain more complex tasks you might need terminal access to your Synology NAS. Enabling terminal access to your Synology NAS is done quite easily.

This is done in four easy steps:. If you want to access the Synology NAS from outside your network you need to setup port forwarding on your router. If your router is supported see Synology WIki you can configure the port forwarding and firewall configuration from the admin webpage. Another great way of accessing a shell is via Shell In A Box.

Shell In A Box implements a web server that can export arbitrary command line tools to a web based terminal emulator. Missile Hugger created a package for both ARM and x86 processors, you can find the package here.

After all, the performance needed to run a shared Git server is easily provided by even the most spartan of Synology devices. It turns out, Synology has a great add-on package for DSM and there are decent how-to guides out there, although each guide is typically missing at least one critical step.

This guide will recreate the effort I went through to set up my own Git server on a practically-untouched Synology NAS. Although it is true that private repository facilities exist on service providers like GitHub which may negate the need for this guide entirelyyou may be an individual that wants more explicit control over your repository or you may want to keep specific data from being on a site hosted by another organization.

In my case, I use my Git server to keep a plethora of work on two Ubuntu and two Windows 10 operating systems all up-to-date. All it takes is running a mere handful of commands across all my devices - a truly wonderful experience the first time you question whether or not you updated the work on your laptop last night.

In the event that you have a Synology device, you want a little more control, and you can handle using the command line and connecting via SSHread on.

Before starting anything, make sure your version of DSM is up-to-date and refer to this list to see if you have a supported server model. You will also need administrator access in order to install the Git Server package, configure permissions, and establish or change repositories on the server itself.

If you are using a Windows machine, you may need a terminal emulator to continue, such as PuTTy. Good tutorials to follow are here or here. You will have to do this step for every distinct repository you establish on the server.
